In a town without cars, where do you begin?
Horse drawn taxi-Because our taxis are radio dispatched,
you may not whistle a taxi down with any positive results. Instead,
just drop by the taxi office on Main Street, pick up the courtesy
phone and let them know how many and where you are going. Fares
begin at $4 per person. If you are staying on the Island, just
call the Taxi office to arrange for your ride (906) 847-3323.
Please note: taxis do not haul large amounts of luggage, your
hotel will organize the transport of your belongings for you.
If you are coming for an extended stay and have alot of items,
Mackinac Island Service Company will move your items by horse
drawn dray just call 906-847-3713.
Dray-Horse drawn flatbed cart used to move anything and
everything from luggage to beer to construction supplies. Operated
by Mackinac Island Service Company on the Arnold Line Dock (906)
847-3713.
Garden Cart-A wheeled cart no larger than 3 feet by 4
feet to move personal items which may or may not be attached
to a bicycle mosty owned by businesses and Island residents.
Dock Porter-A young man or woman who meets the ferry
to transport your luggage to your place of lodging by bicycle
and garden cart. Dock porters will assist with directions to
your hotel and ensure your belongings are in your room. Yes,
it is customary to tip the dockporters $1- $2 per piece of luggage.
Bicycle- Next to the horse, Mackinac Islanders love their
bikes. From heavy duty bikes to sweet classics, everyone rides.
Rentals are available from $4 per hour depending on the type
of bike you'd like to rent-heavy duty, three speed, mountain
or tandem. In addition, there are children's bikes, burley carts
for the little ones and tagalongs for kids who want to tag along
on mom or dad's bike. If you prefer to bring your own bike,
all ferry lines offer a round trip ticket for your bike to make
the excursion to the Island. If you are on the Island for more
than a day, we highly recommend you stop by the Police Department
and pick up a bike license for $3.50, just in case someone "borrows"
your bike or you forget where you've left it. Remember, all
bikes have to be off of Main Street between 2am and 7am or they
risk being impounded. There are public bike racks at Marquette
Park and most hotels offer bike racks for their guests.
Feet-The foot bone is connected to the ankle bone...we
all know the song! Wearing good shoes is key. There is so much
to see on the Island and truckin' along with your own two feet
is a great way to experience the 70 miles of paved and unpaved
dirt trails on Mackinac Island.
