Real Horsepower
Over 600 horses call Mackinac Island home. Saddle horses for trail riding, public or private carriage tours and even drive your own buggies are available to tour Mackinac Island State Park.

Guided and Unguided Trail Riding
The Mackinac experience would not be complete without horseback riding through the woods. Trails abound and whether you are a novice or seasoned pro, our stables have a horse to match your experience. Stable hands offer brief instruction for your ride and yes, they will guide you to their favorite trails and even accompany you and yours for no additional fee. Rates begin at $35 per hour for saddle horses. No experience is necessary just the willingness to learn. All horses are guided out of town into the State Park. In general, saddle horses are are available for riding after breakfast and must be back to the stables by dinner.

Rules of the Road
Horses always have the right of way on Mackinac Island. Riding is best in the Island's interior. Helmets are available and required for children but are not required for adults. All rental horses will be guided out of town by a stable hand. Horses must be kept at a walk on all paved roads. Saddle horses are not permitted on the perimeter highway M-185 or downtown during business hours.

Equine Etiquette
Please do not pet any horses without asking, many sleep while standing and approaching them may startle them unnecessarily.

May I bring my horse to Mackinac?
While there are many barns on the Island, stable space is almost impossible to come by at any time of the year, therefore it is nearly impossible to bring your own horse to the Island. We have often been asked if people may ride with their own horses in our parades and again because of limited stable space, we are unable to provide stable space for guest horses. There is the hope of a public stable but at this time no plans have been approved. Please bookmark this page and if something changes, it will be posted here.
