Equine Etiquette
Please do not pet any horses without asking, many sleep
while standing and approaching them may startle them
unnecessarily.
Horses always have the
right of way on Mackinac Island. Riding is best in the
Island's interior. Helmets are available and required
for children but are not required for adults. All rental
horses will be guided out of town by a stable hand. Horses
must be kept at a walk on all paved roads. Saddle horses are not permitted on the perimeter
highway M-185 or downtown during business hours.
May I bring my horse to Mackinac?
While there are many barns on the Island, stable space is almost impossible to come by at any time of the year, therefore it is nearly impossible to bring your own horse to the Island. We have often been asked if people may ride with their own horses in our parades and again because of limited stable space, we are unable to provide stable space for guest horses.
