Mackinac Island Lilac Festival Parade Theme 2008
The Saturday morning cartoon is the colloquial term for the animated television programming which was typically scheduled on Saturday mornings on the major American television networks from the 1960s to the 1990s and is often referred to by its critics as "illustrated radio" because of its focus on voice performances, music and sound effects. In the United States, the generally accepted times considered to be Saturday mornings are 8am-12pm EST.

By the late 1970's, the networks were encouraged to create educational spots that endeavoured to use animation for enriching content. Far and away the most successful effort was the Schoolhouse Rock series on ABC, which became a television classic.
