Photography
Mackinac offers a paradise of opportunities for amateur
and professional photographers alike. Light and shadow play
continually against the Victorian architecture while the blue
waters, verdant forest, and northern weather patterns challenge
photographers to encompass aspects of both the State Park
and the bustling downtown area. For those wishing to document
Mackinac's horse culture on film or electronic media, the
pastures and barns at Surrey Hills, just past Grand Hotel,
are home to the Island's off-duty horses.
Mackinac has charmed many photographers and their inspired
works, posters, magazines and coffee table books can be found
at Island galleries and shops. Rob Jerstrom, Nancy
May, and Andrejka Hirshegger show their works online and through Island galleries
and shops throughout the season.

It was a mass of purple shadow; and just at one extremity the sun plunged into the lake, leaving its reflection on the water, like the skirts of a robe of fire, floating. This too vanished, and we returned in the soft calm twilight, singing as we went.” Mrs. Jameson, Winter Studies and Summer Rambles, 1837
