Small Point Bed & Breakfast
Alanson and Ann Sheley built Small Point in 1882 on the bluff to the southwest of its present location. Small Point was moved to its present home on Lake Shore Drive during the 1950's when the Moral Re-Armament developed what is now Mission Point Resort. This is the only surviving Gothic Revival cottage on Mackinac Island. Gothic Revival was one of the first styles prevelant during the Victorian Era. Mr. Sheley grew up in Albany, New York and learned his carpentry, stonemason and construction skills while building canals in Canada and lighthouses in Thunder Bay. He married Ann Elizabeth Drury in 1835 and became very successful in the lumber business.

Mr. Sheley served in the Michigan senate, held substantial real estate holdings and became a partner in the Detroit & Cleveland Steam Navigation Company who in turn partnered with other Steamship companies to build Mackinac Island's Grand Hotel.

Nestled at the foothills of Robinson's Folly, just east of Mission Point Resort, Small Point is about 3/4 of a mile from the center of town which lends to a quiet and relaxing break from the hustle and bustle of downtown Mackinac Island. The large wrap around front porch offers spectacular sunrises and views of the freighters crossing the straits of Mackinac. The detail work and craftsmanship expressed in the architectural elements at Small Point are reflective of Sheley's talent, knowledge of carpentry and representation of current styles from the 1880's.
