Self Guided Lilac Tour

  1. West End Boardwalk: Lilacs with twisted trunks formed by the wind. Near Mahoney Ave and M185.
  2. Market & Cadotte: 100 year old lilacs with supports woven into the fabric of homes and gardens. Corner of Market Street and Cadotte Ave toward Grand Hotel
  3. Grand Hotel: Hedge of lilacs along the pool and sprinkled into walkways leading up to Grand Hotel.  
  4. East Bluff: Extraordinary examples of Victorian gardens. A spectacular Ivory Silk lilac tree at easternmost cottage on the Bluff.
  5. Hubbard’s Annex: The Hubbard family is said to have brought the first lilacs to Mackinac. Located in the interior of the island.
  6. Surrey Hill: Generally late blooming lilacs seen on the carriage tours. Purple lilacs are called Royality.
  7. Market Street: A variety of lilacs line Market Street from Cadotte Ave to Fort Hill. Notable lilacs include a 130 year old lilac at Metivier Inn, a low-growing lilac called Palibin at Cottage Inn, Ivory Silk lilac tree at the Post Office, and two Sensation (bi-colored lilac) lilacs near Vintage Glam.
  8. Marquette Park: Largest concentration and variety of lilacs on Mackinac. Approximately 75 varieties and 115 plants. Near downtown and across from the Harbor.
  9. State Harbor: Many of the lilacs in the Mackinac State Harbor were given to the island by the International Lilac Society. Look for a mix of Sweetheart, My Favorite, Russian Nadezhda, Pocahontas, and Dwight Eisenhower.
  10. Bogan Lane Inn: A wonderful Russian lilac called Nadezhda grows at this Bed & Breakfast. Located at Bogan Lane.
  11. Harbour View Inn: The oldest documented lilacs on Mackinac, over 200 years old. Planted by Magdelaine La Framboise in rows leading to the water, can still see 5 today.
  12. Ste. Anne Church: A wide variety of lilacs gifted from the International Lilac Society. Look for President Grevy, Anabel, and Maiden’s Blush.
  13. Mission Point Resort: Lilacs interlaced throughout the resort grounds. Look for the lovely Frederiko Garsia Lorka located on the east side near M185. A double flower that is the first in the world to be labeled as multicolored, having a mix of all seven lilac colors plus yellow at different times during its flowering.
