Last Call for Summer Vacation

The sweet sights and scents of summertime are very much still in full swing here on Michigan’s Crown Jewel.  With two of the best weeks of summer upon us before the Labor Day weekend, the island is bursting with last minute lodging deals, plenty of activities for families, friends, and first time travelers seeking an unparalleled Mackinac Island experience.  We encourage everyone to visit mackinacisland.org to begin planning your last minute summer getaway here on your favorite freshwater island.   Summer vacation is calling and now is the time to answer that call.

Mackinac Island Fudge Festival

The sweetest festival of summer is always saved for last.  Plan a visit for this year’s Mackinac Island Fudge Festival August 24-26 and experience a weekend of demonstrations, family games, specialty menus, an ice cream social, and of course a special fudge egg hunt.  Sweet tooths wanted this coming weekend as the fudge capital of the world celebrates our namesake sweet!

Off The Beaten Path

Whether visiting the island for your first time or your fiftieth, there’s always something new to discover on Mackinac.

To begin, we encourage anyone able and up for the challenge to strap on your walking shoes or grab your bike and head to the top of the island where you’ll find the unparalleled tranquility of Fort Holmes.  Constructed by British soldiers in 1814 during the War of 1812, Fort Holmes boasts panoramic views of Michigan’s Lower and Upper Peninsula, the Mackinac Bridge, Round Island, Bois Blanc Island, and even Canada.  Picnic tables offer the ultimate spot for a scenic lunch on the go.

Also for those seeking a less adventurous experience, grab a bike and head out along the flat terrain of M-185 to British Landing for an afternoon picnic on the shores of Lake Huron.  British Landing, smack dab at the 4 mile point when biking the circumference of the island offers a welcoming respite with restrooms, a picnic area, and water access.

Finally, for something unusual on the open waters of the Great Lakes, we encourage you to check out a fish eye view of Mackinac Island via a sunrise or sunset kayak or paddle board tour.
