With motorized vehicles banned on Mackinac Island since 1898, the primary modes of transportation are walking, biking, or horse-drawn carriages.
With the circumference of the island measuring a total 8.2 miles and the entire Island just 3.8 square miles, tourists and locals alike often choose to meander around by bike. After all, it is the perfect way to take in the picturesque views, enjoy the beautiful Mackinac Island weather, and spend some quality time with friends and family.
There’s only one thing left to decide: should you rent a bike on Mackinac Island or bring your own?
Renting Bikes on Mackinac Island
No bike? No problem! There are a variety of bicycle rental shops on Mackinac Island that offer an array of bicycle options for your visit. No one should have to miss out on the magic of Mackinac Island, so choose between traditional bicycles, children’s bikes, tandem bicycles, burley trailers, three-wheeled adult trikes and more!
Bicycles are generally rented by the hour with discounts included in half days, full days, and overnight options. Bike baskets, bike locks, and helmets are generally included with rentals.
In addition to the variety of options available for your entire group, the convenience of the bike rental process is why many Mackinac Island visitors choose to rent bicycles during their stay. Renting a bike saves space on your journey up to Northern Michigan and saves time when boarding a ferry to Mackinac Island.
Island House Bike Rental is just one of your bike renting options and they understand that you want to embark on your Mackinac Island adventures as soon as possible. They’ve made the bike rental process quick, easy, and convenient. Simply select the bike you would like to rent, specify the amount of time you will be renting for (by the hour, for the day, or overnight), and soon you’ll be on your way! Bike locks and baskets are included with all their rentals.
Bringing Your Own Bike to Mackinac Island
If you choose to bring your own bike, that’s great! Every year, tens of thousands of cyclists visit the island and bring their own bikes knowing there is a nominal up-charge to round-trip ferry tickets. If you’re bringing your own bike, don’t forget to bring a lock!

Bicycle Safety on Mackinac Island
Bicycle safety is of the utmost importance when riding on Mackinac Island. While the iconic scenic loop is mostly flat and paved, there are winding trails and hilly roads throughout Mackinac Island, which bikers must pay attention to while riding.
Control your speed, walk down steep hills, and always give horses and pedestrians the right of way. People seen riding recklessly or dangerously will be given citations by local police. A general rule of thumb when riding on Mackinac Island: be safe and have fun!
