E-bikes on Mackinac Island

E-bikes (e-cycles) are allowed for people with a mobility disability and who go through the licensing process with the City of Mackinac Island. Find Mackinac Island’s definition of “mobility disability” here.
The e-bike rules are the same within Mackinac Island State Park, which makes up more than 80% of Mackinac Island.You can also get around on car-free Mackinac Island via three other forms of transportation: Pedal bicycle, by horse and by foot.
You may qualify for an e-cycle license if you…
- Cannot walk 200 feet without stopping to rest, use a brace, cane, crutch, wheelchair, or other assistive device and/or
- Use portable oxygen and/or
- Have a qualifying cardiac condition and/or
- Have an arthritic, neurological, orthopedic condition and/or
- Have another physical impairment that severely limits your ability to walk and pedal
Types of E-cycles That May Be Licensed
All e-cycles must have a permanently affixed label showing its classification, top assisted speed, and motor wattage.
Two Wheeled E-Bicycles
Only Class 1 e-bicycles are allowed, these are commonly referred to as “pedal assist” bicycles. If your e-bike has a throttle, the throttle must be permanently removed before registering your e-bike.
Three Wheeled E-Tricycles
Class 1 or 2 e-tricycles, as defined by Michigan Vehicle Code may be approved.
To apply for an e-cycle license, it is preferred to submit the required documentation at least 14 days prior to your visit. Licensing can be done on the same day of your arrival to Mackinac but availability and/or approval is not guaranteed. Read more about the process in the Frequently Asked Questions.
