In some ways Mackinac Island feels like a theme park. Visitors enter at the ferry dock, stroll through downtown and explore other areas including the Mission District, Stonecliffe and Mackinac Island State Park. As such, you might expect that the whole place opens for business at a certain time in the morning and closes at the same time at night.
Yet, Mackinac Island is an authentic community with shops, restaurants and places to stay owned by real people who often live just up the hill from town. Some people keep their Mackinac Island shops open year-round while others only open during the visitor season from May through October. Some people close their doors for the day in the early evening while others keep them open later, perhaps until the last Mackinac Island ferry leaves for the night.
So, there is no single answer for what time of day Mackinac Island shops close for the night or how late they stay open. But there are some general rules of thumb that give you an idea of how things operate at different times of the year.
Mackinac Island Store Closing Times In Different Seasons
In the summer from Memorial Day through Labor Day, many Mackinac Island shops keep their latest open hours of the visitor season, sometimes until 11 p.m. Typically, you’ll find closing times between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. during the summer, which gives you time for shopping after dinner. You also can expect opening and closing times to be more consistent from one day to the next because the flow of visitors to Mackinac Island tends to be steady all summer.
In the spring and fall including May, September and October, some shops may close earlier in the evening – perhaps by 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. – while some others continue to stay open until 8 p.m. or 9 p.m. They also may have different schedules from one day to the next, with longer hours on weekends and shorter hours on weekdays when foot traffic is often a little lighter.
Some shops may have more limited hours at the very beginning or end of the visitor season, depending on weather and how that affects the number of visitors. In fact, even though Mackinac Island ferry boats begin passenger service in late April and continue through the end of October, some shops don’t open at all until the middle of May and they usually close for the season earlier in October. Staffing can play a role in this, as many of Mackinac Island’s seasonal workers don’t arrive until they’re done with high school or college.

During Mackinac Island’s offseason from November through late April, most shops are closed. A few of them, such as Doud’s Market, stay open all year to serve the 500-plus residents who call Mackinac Island home. Some others have limited hours or are open by appointment during special occasions in early December when the annual Christmas bazaar and tree lighting is held and between Christmas and New Year’s Day.

Which Mackinac Island Shops Stay Open The Latest?
The grocery store (which caters to residents, visitors and workers alike), coffee shops and bakeries, and bike rentals tend to open earliest in the morning. Mackinac Island’s art galleries and museums often have banker’s hours. Souvenir shops and fudge shops often stay open later and are most likely to be open after dinner. Doud’s Market also opens earlier and closes later than many stores on Mackinac Island.
Check with individual shops for specific opening and closing times. Depending on foot traffic, some shops may stay open later than their posted hours to accommodate large crowds, while at other times they may close earlier than posted if it’s a slow day.

What To Do After Mackinac Island Shops Close For The Day
Because some shops typically stay open until the last ferry boat of the night returns to the mainland, Mackinac Island day-trippers never experience a time when downtown is quiet. For visitors who spend the night on Mackinac Island, the hours after the last ferry leaves and the shops close are when many of their favorite moments happen.
For example, after Mackinac Island shops close for the day you can grab drinks at bars and restaurants while enjoying live music that happens every single night of the visitor season. You can enjoy a leisurely stroll on the boardwalk and watch a spectacular Mackinac Island sunset. You can relax on a Mackinac Island porch and enjoy the stillness of the night. You can go ballroom dancing at Grand Hotel, play glow golf at Mission Point, pedal a bicycle by the light of the moon or hike up to Fort Holmes for epic stargazing.
By the time you wake up the next morning, Mackinac Island’s coffee shops will be back open, with retail stores soon to follow.
